Number of missing persons due to the typhoon Sendong continues to increase. Almost a week after the flash floods that devastated a large part of southern Philippines, the magnitude of the tragedy continues to change for the worse, as the official number of reported missing persons jumped dramatically overnight, from 51 to 1,079 on Friday morning. If the majority are never found, the death toll would nearly double from the current 1,080. A disaster official clarified however that the figure may include unidentified bodies. The Light Rail Transit (LRT) Lines 1 and 2 will end operations earlier than scheduled on Dec. 24 and 31, the LRT Administration said. LRTA Administrator Rafael Rodriguez cited ridership and traffic data from 2006 to 2010 that showed a decline in the number of commuters on those dates. Posted Friday night on the LRTA website was an advisory that on Dec. 24, the last commercial train will depart Baclaran and Roosevelt in LRT Line 1 at 8 p.m. Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz has reminded private sector employers to observe the pay rules during the holidays and special days that will be celebrated nationwide in the remainder of 2011. Proclamation 84 of 2010, which declared the regular holidays for 2011, lists Dec. 25, Christmas Day; and Dec. 30, Rizal Day, as holidays. It also lists December 31, 2011, a Saturday, as a non-working special day as it is the last day of the year. Proclamation 295 of 2011 declares Jan. 1, 2012 as a regular holiday.
